The book is attributed by Jewish scholars to be written by the prophet Samuel, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. It’s a historical book.
The name Judges in Hebrew: Shophetim, which means “to put right and then rule”
The Judges that God raises up throughout the book, are not reflected of Judges in a court, although some of them did provide judgement like a court judge. But ultimately these Judges are Military Leaders.
The entire book of Judges covers a period of time of between 300-350 years.
We’ll see 2 repeated phrases throughout the book – “in those days there was no king”, and “everyone did what was right in their own eyes”
